Driveway gravel is usually estimated from the area to cover, the depth of the material, and the density of the selected gravel. Driveway construction may also involve multiple layers rather than one uniform depth.

Measure the driveway
For a rectangular area, multiply length by width to get square feet. For irregular areas, break the driveway into manageable sections and calculate each section separately.
Convert depth to feet
Because cubic-yard calculations use feet, divide the depth in inches by 12 before calculating volume.
Cubic yards = length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27
Why driveway quantities vary
Driveway projects can use different stone sizes and multiple base and surface layers. Material density also varies, so the same cubic-yard volume can have different weights.
Estimate tons carefully
