The ATHENA Gravel Calculator uses length, width, and depth to calculate cubic yards. It also shows an estimated tonnage and a practical order quantity.
How to calculate gravel volume
Multiply the project length by width to get square feet. Convert the planned depth from inches to feet, multiply by the area to get cubic feet, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
Cubic yards = length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27
How are gravel tons estimated?
ATHENA uses an approximate conversion of 1.4 tons per cubic yard for planning. Actual weight varies with the type, density, moisture, and supplier of the gravel.
Estimated tons = cubic yards × approximate tons per cubic yard
Example: a 20 × 30 ft area at 4 inches
A 20 × 30 ft area is 600 square feet. Four inches is one-third of a foot, producing about 7.41 cubic yards before any planning allowance. The ton estimate can then be used as a starting point for a supplier conversation.
Why the final tonnage can differ
Two gravel products can occupy similar volumes but weigh differently. Rock type, grading, moisture, compaction, and supplier-specific density all affect the final weight, so treat the calculator's tonnage as an estimate rather than an exact delivered quantity.
Planning a gravel order
For a simple rectangular project, use the finished length, width, and planned depth. For irregular areas, divide the space into smaller sections and add the volumes. Then compare the calculator result with your supplier's stated coverage, density, minimum delivery, and ordering increments.
Cubic yards or tons?
Use cubic yards to describe the physical volume of material your project requires. Tons are useful when a supplier prices or sells the gravel by weight. Keeping both numbers gives you a clearer starting point when comparing quotes.
