ATHENA CALCULATORS

How Much Gravel Do I Need?

Estimate the amount of gravel needed for driveways, walkways, patios, drainage areas, and landscape beds. Enter the area dimensions and planned depth to calculate cubic yards, estimated tons, and a practical order quantity.

How the gravel calculator works

Measure the finished area in feet and enter the gravel depth in inches. The calculator converts the measurements into volume, then uses a planning density to estimate weight.

Cubic feet = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12)
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Estimated tons = cubic yards × 1.4

Worked example

For a 20 ft × 10 ft area at 4 inches deep, the volume is about 2.47 cubic yards. Using the calculator's planning density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard gives an estimated weight of about 3.46 tons before any ordering allowance.

How deep should gravel be?

Depth depends on the project, base preparation, drainage, material, traffic, and local conditions. Around 3 inches can be a planning starting point for some walkways or landscape beds, while driveways may require a deeper and properly prepared base. These are planning suggestions, not universal installation requirements.

Cubic yards vs. tons

Cubic yards measure volume; tons measure weight. Gravel density varies by rock type, size, moisture, and supplier. Before ordering, ask the supplier for the density or tons-per-yard figure for the exact material you are buying.

Planning for irregular areas

For a curved or irregular space, divide the area into rectangles or other simple sections. Calculate each section separately and add the cubic-yard results. Measure the finished area as accurately as practical because small changes in depth can change the quantity significantly.

Important planning note

This calculator provides an estimate for material planning. Supplier quantities can differ because of material density, compaction, moisture, base conditions, and installation requirements. Confirm the final order quantity with your gravel supplier.
